pattern is a free color gradient puzzle you play in the browser. Each round shows a grid of tiles that fade smoothly from one color to another, except for a few pairs of tiles that have been swapped out of place.

Find a tile that breaks the gradient and drag it onto the tile that belongs there. The two swap, and when every tile is home the board is solved. The faster you solve it, the more the round is worth.

A run is five boards worth up to 10 points each, 50 in all, and each board hides more swapped pairs than the last. Pick easy or hard, and play the daily set, five boards that are the same for every player that UTC day.

How do you play pattern?

Each round shows a color gradient grid with a few pairs of tiles swapped out of place. Drag a misplaced tile onto the spot where it belongs to swap the two. Put every tile home before the timer runs out.

How is a round scored?

A solved board is worth up to 10 points. A quick solve earns the full 10, and the score falls away the longer you take. Boards with more swapped pairs allow more time. A full run scores up to 50.

What happens if the timer runs out?

You keep partial credit for every pair you fixed before time ran out, up to just over 9 points on a nearly finished board. An untouched board scores nothing.

What changes between easy and hard?

Easy boards hide one to three swapped pairs. Hard boards start at two and climb to six by the last round, with a little more time on the clock for the bigger repairs.

What does pattern test?

Visual pattern recognition and speed. You have to see which tiles break a smooth color gradient, often by only a small shade, and fix them quickly with a clean drag.

Is there a daily pattern challenge?

Yes. The daily set gives every player the same five boards, picked from the UTC date, so your daily score is comparable to anyone else that day.
